Dedicated Servers

When it comes to hosting your site on a server there are two basic types of hosting. Virtual hosting is when your site shares a server with many other sites. Dedicated hosting is when you have the entire dedicated server to yourself. There are some great advantages and disadvantages to having a dedicated server. One of the biggest advantages to having a dedicated server is that you get the entire server to yourself so you don’t have to worry about other people’s sites slowing you down and you will get the entire hard drive and all the system resources to yourself. Another advantage is that most dedicated hosting packages come with an easy to use control panel so you can add and subtract sites at will and you can change settings, add email servers, IP addresses and much more right from this control panel.

Among the potential down sides of a dedicated server is that it can be more expensive then virtual hosting and many hosting companies offer only limited tech support – unless you pay for it (although Got Web Host will provide you any assistance they can). If you needed something added or changed on your server and you don’t know how to do it yourself you may have to pay to have it done. There are many companies that offer managed dedicated hosting which works very well for people that want their own server, but don’t know all the technical aspects of setting it up. Managed dedicated hosting provides you with the flexibility of a dedicated server and security of full tech support, but it typically costs more than just a regular dedicated server.

Another option in dedicated hosting is what is called co-location hosting. With regular dedicated hosting you are leasing or renting the server you are using. With co-location hosting you provide them with the server and they attach it to their network. You own the hardware and they provide the connection. Co-location can be a little more expensive than normal dedicated hosting and is normally used by people with very specific needs.

Dedicated servers can provide anyone with great flexibility and the option to grow, shrink or change their business/sites without having the hassle of sharing a server. For some it is too much hosting, for others it is the only way to go.
