Keywords in Your Domain Name
July 22nd, 2008 by J.K.

Having your website’s keywords in its domain name can be a nice advantage for your site. If no other ranking reasons existed the fact that search engines like Google and Yahoo bold the keywords people searched for when they list the results should be reason enough to strongly consider this factor when getting a domain name.

For example, if your site is about tree climbing and your domain name is treeclimbing.com and the person right above or below you in the rankings has a domain that is blogspot.somethingcool.com/stuff/treeclimbing, your site will automatically hold more weight in the eyes of the average searcher.

Aaron Wall wrote, “If the domain name is an exact match I believe it is strongly weighted because it might be a sign of a navigational query. Plus having an exact match domain means they were either early to their topic (and thus perhaps a topical leader), or they may have paid a domainer nosebleed prices for the domain.” Having a domain name with the keywords in it, as long as they aren’t part of a multi-hyphened domain can led you instant credibility and go a long way in searchers’ eyes to drawing them into your site.

One of the strongest assets a keyword rich domain name can provide you is inbound links with good anchor text. Barry Schwartz wrote, “But the key is that people will link to you by your domain name. So if you sell Blue Widgets and your domain is www.bluewidgets.com, people are more likely to link to you as “Blue Widgets” than if you had the name rustybrick.com.” When people organically find your site and decide to link to it they will often just take the domain name and use that as the anchor text. If your domain is keyword rich, it can help you greatly. If the domain isn’t keyword rich it can make the value of these inbound links significantly lower.

Using a domain that has your keywords in it may not get you a top 10 ranking, but it will help you in many other aspects of your website’s growth.
