Search Engine Optimization Overview

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the act of optimizing your sites so that they get good rankings in the search engines. The basic theory of SEO is to choose a keyword or phrase that best describes your site, or a section of your site, and then use various optimization techniques to tweak the site. Done properly when someone goes to a search engine and searches for that keyword or phrase they will find your site.
One of the most well used SEO tactics is to have a high quality title tag on your site. This tag is used as the title of your site and tells the search engines and the world what your site is all about. Another important factor is the use of keywords within the body of the site itself. If you don’t use these keywords in your site, the search engines will not know what your site is about and will have trouble ranking it for anything in particular.
Equally as important in SEO is the number and quality of incoming links to your site. These incoming links tell the search engines that people like your site and that it is a site that offers value to visitors. The more people that link to your site the more weight these links carry with the search engines and the higher your site will rank for the keywords and keyword phrases you are optimizing for.
As the search engines continue to evolve their searching and indexing techniques it is becoming more and more important to have a site that has actual value to the users. The search engines want return users. If all they ever linked to were spammy, junky sites people would stop using them. These days having a site with some nice original content can do wonders for your rankings in the search engines.
Ranking well in the search engines is not easy, but if you do only a few things you should have a good title tag, use the keywords wisely within the text of the site, get high quality inbound links and produce a site that is content rich and offers good value to the visitors.
